Medical imaging is one of the major sources of information circulating in health records. This is a complex, multivariate and not directly structured information, whose value goes well beyond simple visual exploration.

It is therefore essential to develop systems for the correct management of this data, suitable for big data analytics. This lecture is aimed to show how medical images can be managed as "data" and discuss related challenges and opportunities.
